Municipal housing

Municipal housing is housing provided to low income households who are struggling to find a place to live.
For those who would like to move into municipal housing, applications are open for tenants in April and October. (This is referred to as "regular applications.")
If there are no applicants for municipal housing during the periodic application period, applications are opened once again from February to June and from August to December. (This is referred to as "ongoing applications.")
Pamphlets providing details on how to apply and application forms (in Japanese) will be distributed as follows during the application period.
Regular applications: Yokohama City Hall, ward offices, administrative service corners, and the Yokohama Municipal Housing Supply Corporation website

To move in to municipal housing, you need to have been living or working in Yokohama City for 6 months or more.

Superior quality rental housing (subsidized housing)

- This is housing which is subsidized partially by the City of Yokohama and national government according to the income of households.
- There are three kinds of subsidized housing which falls under this category in Yokohama City: "Yokohama Livein," "Kosodate Livein" and "superior quality rental housing for the elderly."
- The individual applicant and people living with this person need to be registered in the Basic Resident Register.
Non-Japanese residents are also eligible to apply if they are registered.
- Applicants will be screened on the basis of their income, as well as other conditions.
- The place where you apply to move in to this housing differs depending on the type of housing.

Yokohama Livein

- These are rental condominiums for families.

Kosodate Livein

- These are rental condominiums for families with a monthly household income of 214,000 yen or less who have children under the age of 18 years.
- Housing under this category is located within 20 minutes walking distance of hospitals and other such facilities children depend on.
- There are also child-rearing facilities within 1 km of housing under this category.

Superior quality rental housing for the elderly

- These are rental condominiums for people aged 60 years and above.
- Housing under this category incorporates the concept of Universal Design.
- The condominiums are equipped with an alarm system which notifies the relevant facility in the event the occupant falls over due to an illness, etc.

However, they must meet the criteria in terms of level of income, etc. In addition, subsidized rent is only available after the birth of the child.
Superior quality rental housing for the elderly

In principle, households fitting this description are not entitled to live in housing under this category.
However, in some cases they may be entitled if the household comprises solely of persons aged 60 years or above and children under the age of 18 years.

Safety net housing

- This is housing for those who are having difficulty in finding a place to live.
- For some of this housing, subsidized rent and other assistance is available to those with low incomes (monthly household income of 158,000 yen or less, or 214,000 yen or less for those raising children).
- Applicants must not be receiving housing assistance or housing security benefits.
- Applicants must live or work in Yokohama.

City of Yokohama Housing Support Council (support to help people find a place to live, etc.)

This organization helps people who are having trouble renting housing find a place to live, such as those with foreign citizenship, elderly persons, people with disabilities, people with a low income, and people raising children.
